“Behind The Net”

August 30, 2010

This is a painting I call “Behind the Net” and is a scene from my grandson’s first soccer game last Saturday. Nicholas is the tallest in the white shirt and a member of the Mavericks Team. Their team uniforms were not ready so they played in white tee shirts, which I liked better for the composition of my painting. This is a watercolor on arches 140# cold press, 12″x16″.

While on a road trip recently to Lubbock Texas, we traveled US Highway 6 and went through Cisco, a small west Texas town. This abandoned office warehouse building got my attention first with all the unusual shapes, secondly for the interesting shadows. The painting is watercolor on paper and is a full sheet, 22″x30″.

This watercolor painting is  a new format size of 9 2/3″x28″ for me and it was a new world trying to fit a composition into a long horizontal rectangle. The scene is on Ross Ave., looking south. My goal is “How my art work relates to the Catholic Foundation Plaza and the Arts District”. I named this painting “the Arts Neighborhood, the Center of
Interest”. This is an accumulation of my life experiences growing up and living in Dallas, regularly attending ART District exhibitions and performances, and attending and being confirmed at Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe. We attended the broadway play “Superman” at the Wiley last month, which was my 4-year-old grandson’s first live performance.
